The bad first. It is hot. Texas hot. We are not reaching for sweaters in July. We are reaching for shorts, air conditioning, and anything that keeps us cool. And if you do not have allergies when you move here — you will. Cedar fever is real and watching cedar trees release their pollen is a sight to behold.
The good — and there is a lot of it. San Antonio is Military City USA. Four military bases, thousands of retired military families, and a community that genuinely gives back. Fiesta and NIOSA raise money to maintain San Antonio's beautiful 176 year old streets. Live music every single day within 15 to 20 minutes. Wine country an hour away in Fredericksburg with wineries popping up everywhere from New Braunfels to Boerne. Wurstfest every November in New Braunfels — three weekends of beer, sausage, and rock and roll polka music. Holiday lights that make this place look like Hallmark USA. A Fourth of July hometown parade where you sit on the steps and watch fire trucks roll by.
San Antonio is sitting at 2 million people with another 500,000 coming. It is still cheaper than Houston, cheaper than Dallas, and significantly cheaper than Austin. No state income tax. And right now is the time to buy — not six months from now when rates drop and prices go back up. Buy the home, save the money, and refinance when rates come down.
